Second 1873-CC No Arrows?

Has anyone gotten to the bottom of the "phantom" 1873-CC No Arrows dime that appeared in the PCGS population report a few years ago? The last thing I read about it was Rusty Goe's article in the E-Sylum Volume 6, Number 24 on June 15, 2003.

Any updates?

My understanding is that a low grade 1873-CC with arrows seated dime was shown in an accidental misprint (by PCGS) in their population reports (somewhere around 2001, 2002 or 2003) as an 1873-CC without arrows seated dime. Consequently, their error was pointed out and they (PCGS) have subsequently removed it from that category and the same coin is now correctly listed as an 1873-CC with arrows seated dime in their population reports. There's still...only one to rule them all!! If any members (or even non-members) have information to the contrary, please do come forward with it.

The winning bidder was #1087. Anyone want to identify him/ herself?

This has been an on-again-off-again cauldron of confusion for PCGS through the years. The MS-64 and MS-65 listings are one in the same coin. At one time this Unique piece was graded by PCGS as an MS-64. Then it was subsequently upgraded to MS-65 by NGC, and later on crossed back over to PCGS in the same grade. All the old certification labels have been returned to the grading services. NGC has updated its Census Report and shows zero examples of this date. The current PCGS Population Report lists three (3) 1873-CC Without Arrows dimes -- 1 in MS-64, 1 in MS-65, and 1 in some grade below VG. In 2003, when I was finishing the manuscript on "The Mint on Carson Street," I contacted PCGS in an attempt to clear up the mysterious appearance of a "second" specimen. My experience was later reported in a lengthy Coin World article. In essence, PCGS admitted that the Circulated listing was a typo and was in fact an 1873-CC With Arrows dime. By 2005, PCGS had removed all traces of 1873-CC Without Arrows dimes from its pop report. Then after I crossed the NGC MS-65 piece over to PCGS, a listing for it appeared in the proper category in PCGS' pop report. Since then, the MS-64 listing has returned, as has the Circulated listing.

I realize what a bookkeeping nightmare it must be for PCGS to accurately track the nearly 15.5 million coins its graded since 1986(especially with all the resubmissions and crossovers). But in the case of such a classic rarity as the 1873-CC Without Arrows dime, I feel that accurate population data is imperative.

On a side note, I just checked the PCGC pop reports and they are showing only the 65 specimen now.

Is that in their online pop report? Because PCGS' hard copy still lists three examples. Maybe they've finally corrected the error of their way. I'll receive the next hard copy of the pop report in about two weeks and I'll post my findings.

Oldnewbie, please send an image of your dime to our main email (the one to which you requested an invitation to this blogsite) so we can post it in the picture gallery. Send it in .jpg format in as large a size as possible (any other coins you'd like as well).

Yes, I checked the online report.

I'd love to send an image of my dime. I'll do it as soon as I can.

Rusty thanks for your updated info on this subject. There still is only the one!
