Thank you for this very concise explanation coupled with bright, clear pictures. It has helped clear up my question completely. It appears that my example; 1877-CC dime (NGC MS-66) is the scarcer Type 1 variety.
Garry, Just so you know, there is no way to post a picture in a comment. However, if you posted a new blog, you would be able to upload your pictures into the blog. I have one of these too, I have to pull it our of storage and determine which it is.
I have a Type 2. It is NGC MS61. Very nice coin. Doesn't seem to be a way to post a photo
