On Wednesday evening June 25, 2008 in New York City, an 1870-CC $20 gold piece graded XF-40 by NGC sold for $299,000 ($260,000 hammer price). Pre-sale estimates suggested that this coin might bring in excess of $325,000. In fact, a poll conducted on C4OA's blogsite resulted in a majority opinion of a price realized of $350,000 or higher.
This specimen of the rarest date/denomination in the "CC" gold coin series was featured in Stack's Husky sale which included a fine assortment of U.S. gold pieces.

I am surprised that this beautiful specimen (1870-CC $20 NGC XF-40) hammered that low. I know that just recently an 1870-CC $20 NGC VF-30 was sticker priced at 310K!
The "Husky" example here is not only graded higher but a much, much nicer looking coin. in my humble opinion, the buyer of this "Husky" coin got a steal.
The winning bidder was #1087. Anyone want to identify him/ herself? (I posted this accidentally in the 1873-CC dime posting. Sorry about that!)
I really, really wish I could say it was me but alas...not
My son is a "heavy metal" drummer in two bands, I know he could not buy such a coin, lol.
