BOOKS-BOOKS!

THERE ARE NUMEROUS BOOKS ON THE MARKET ABOUT OUR CARSON CITY COIN COLLECTING HOBBY.

RUSTY HAS TWO VOLUMES (AWARD WINING) MUST READS!
-THE MINT ON CARSON STREET
-JAMES CRAWFORD: MASTER OF THE MINT AT CARSON CITY.

I ALSO LIKE BOOKS WRITTEN ABOUT THE COMSTOCK LODE. EVERY TIME I PASS BY VIRGINIA CITY, I VISIT THE MARK TWAIN BOOKSTORE.

"Mark Twain may have defined a literary classic as 'a book which people praise and don't read,'" writes Cynthia Kennedy of Virginia City, "but this shop holds thousands of books people DO read. A creaking boardwalk leads to this mother lode of Nevada history, including photos and artifacts left from when the shop was the Mark Twain Museum of Memories." http://www.marktwainbooks.com/

GO CHECK IT OUT NEXT TIME YOU'RE THERE! YOU WONT REGRET IT.

Yes, The Mark Twain is a great bookstore. I have purchased over 10 books there over the years. My last one was "The Roar and the Silence" (Ronald M. James). The Mark Twain store in Virginia City is also one of the few bookstores that carry "With Curry's Compliments - The Story of Abraham Curry" (Doris Cerveri), a hard to find must read for all CC fans.

Hey Michael,
Nice to see you share some of your immense insight re books of interest to C4OA members. Let me offer my recommendation on three books I think are "must read":
1. Comstock Mining and Miners, Eliot Lord, pursuant to work authorized by the Department of the Interior. Rich in many, many reporting areas. My copy is an 1883edition but availability is probably better on a 1946 republishing.
2. The History of the Comstock Lode 1850 - 1920, Grant Smith. This was published in 1943 by the Nevada State Bureau of Mines and will amaze you with stories and insight.
3. History of Nevada (with Index), Thompson and West. Written in 1881, 2nd ed 1958. We're talking over 800 pgs between the hard cover book and the index (be sure to get the index). If there is anything left out pertaining to the era we are interested in, I can't imagine what it would be.
In future columns I'll report on a dozen other books you will not want to be without. Cheers, The Treasurer

Gonna have to second The History of the Comstock Lode as a must read. Thats a really interesting book to read, and has some really cool stories to read about. Immensely enjoyed reading through it recently.
